Dynamics (力動)
Dynamics means 'to be active and energetic' in the dictionary.
In the modern societies as well as in the traditional ones calligraphy has been considered as a static art. Thus, it is possible to guess that this viewpoint may have been the barrier for eastern calligraphy to advance towards the world market.
It is time calligraphy should dynamically go forward into the world. For this to come true, it is necessary that calligraphy itself should become dynamic. Recently, Korean traditional physical exercises (for example, Danhak and Kuksundo) have made great efforts to make themselves globalized. However, their efforts have not received the same results as Taekwondo. Taekwondo has been very successful worldwide, and it has been popular owing to its charismatic appeal. Thus, calligraphy should secure the same charismatic appeal at a certain level to succeed in the world market.
Every activity in the 21st century has its own dynamic aspects. It is certain some activities have been so dynamic that there are some trends that are to be more or less static. However, a moving and energetic culture is still the mainstream of the western world. To be harmonized with the trends of western modern culture and arts, especially with its youth culture, it is necessary not only to emphasize the dynamic aspects of calligraphy but also to adopt energetic methods. It is worth trying to combine calligraphy activities with Taekwondo or various performances.
Thus, that is how we came to an agreement on the theme, 'Dynamics' for the 2011 WCBJ.
